Solution to illegal imigration...?

Zany way to 'solve' illegal imigration problem, combining many of my ideas.

Step 1: find the most defensable line possible way down south in mexico, likely past the edge of the baja.

2: Buy land from Mexico. Billions of dollars. But try to do it in such a way as the money is not wasted on corruption. Enriching the population decreases the economic pressures to go north. And people further south may be satisfied with the alternative of a spanish speaking moderately wealthy nation as opposed to english speaking US.

3. Start building a massive, state of the art wall from coast to coast. Nothing gets thru here without permision. Totally sealable.

4. Carve out new states. Here's the deal: anyone inside the boundry becomes a US citizen, just like in the olden days. Subtext: all illegals should head south into new state areas to recieve benifits of citizenship. Additional insentitve would be to eliminate insentives to remain non-citizens.

5. Massive immigration reform, making it immensly easier to enter country/and or become a citizen. People given id when entering country so they are easily found if they become a problem. We want more people to join our culture and spread our ideals. let them come.

6. With new states, we get more senators, and political power moves further south in the house of reps. Illegals are reduced to a non-issue, because of the massive amnisty, ease of legal entry, impracticality of illegal entry, and so forth. With no illegal human traficing, trafficing of other bad things (drugs, WMD's, etc) is much harder to hide. And the tax base is hugely grown as there are many more people and basically no untaxed labor.

7. Precident set for further expansion of the US. Potential regions for statehood have modern day examples of how to join the USA if they are so inclined.

Now, to spread this idea to others...

This solution assumes a few things that are very unlikely to happen. First and foremost, that anyone in the world would accept and expansionist US. Second, assumes that Mexico, a soverign nation would even consider "selling" land without the use of force. Third, that anything can be considered totally sealable. Beyond those considerations, I do agree with creating a more stable and affluent economy in northern mexico as a long-term solution to the issue of illegal immigration. Also a streamlining of the current naturalization process would be prudent as well. Anybody that naturalizes to the US already knows more about the US than a lot of High School Grads. I don't think that moving influence to the south through the House of reps is going to make a huge difference. Currently the fastest growing parts of the US are located in the southwest portion of the US already. Come the next census and more influence is already pushed there. I think that point 5 is the most reasonable and most likely reform that could happen. Also an aggresive restructuring of the Mexican economy would be very helpful. How that would be accomplished is another issue though. If we could establish a better relationship with Mexico and force corporations to follow much stricter rules when expanding there would probably be the best bet.

The US has always been expansionist, up until just after WW2 (Hawaii wasn't yet a state then). The concept of new states like Puerto Rico has been discussed for years, as has the thought of Canadians in part or whole joining. Plus, plenty of americans already own property in northern mexico, so there is a welcoming population base.

Secondly, the US bought the Gadsten Purchase from mexico for the railroad a hundred years ago, and Tucson is right in the middle of it. So there is a precident. I think Alaska was bought also, not to mention the Loisiana Purchase.

Totally sealable border impossible? Probibly. But making smugling across it impracticle and unprofitable? Much more easy.

I will agree with you on the Gadson purchase and the purchase of the alaskan territory as well, but one has to mention that they were bought well over a hundred years ago. Much has happened since then, at that point the US was not the pre-eminent power of the world. Yes Hawaii was made a state after WWII, but no actual territory other than small islands was acquired after the alaskan purchase. In fact, I'd wager that all of the islands that we consider territories does not even come close to the size of the Gadson purchase alone. No substantial territory has been acquired in over 130 years.

I also hesitate to acceed that making a border crossing impracticle. People tend to find a way when they want to. Unprofitable on the other hand is a whole other cookie. That's why I agree with your original point 5, and a portion of point 1. But in any case, you did mention in the first place that this was a zany idea. Things would be far better if people would approach persistant problems from a different angle as opposed to trying the same thing over and over and over again. Totally useless. Ok I've said my piece. :)
